A €9.6 Million Redevelopment Program at the five-star Quinta do Lago Resort in 2015 produced the Quinta do Lago North Course, which is the latest jewel in the crown of the Algarve. Measuring 6,776 yards (6,195 Metres) this par 72 course was designed by 2014 Winning Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley and the brilliant American golf course architect Beau Welling. The course features numerous water hazards and strategically placed bunkers which, combined with undulating greens, provide a test of golf that demands a strategic mind, and precision ball-striking. The course also benefits from four different sets of tees, designed to allow golfers of all standards to enjoy the challenge it presents. Other facilities include a driving range, putting green, restaurant and snack bar.
As the most photographed hole in golf, the 16th hole of Vale De Lobo’s Royal Golf Course has become synonymous with golf in the Algarve, and this 226-yard par 3 requires a strong mind and a great shot to hit the green amidst the sound of the hungry sea crashing against the cliffs below. Penal pine trees that border rolling fairways and many picturesque lakes also mean the remaining 17 holes of this stunning par 72 golf course present an excellent challenge, especially the par 3 ninth where an almost island green demands a well-struck shot. Vale Do Lobo also benefits from a restaurant, snack bar, putting green and driving range, whilst the surrounding nightlife means many golfers decide to stay and find a 19th hole to frequent.
Established in 1969, The Old Course remains one of the best golf courses the Algarve has to offer. Ideally situated just half-an-hour from Faro Airport, this Par 72 meanders through established pine trees that lay in wait for any golf balls that stray off the undulating fairways, and you’ll need the extra control hitting from the fairway provides if you want to find the medium-sized greens with your approach shots. Therefore, it’s a good idea to get there well before your tee-time to warm-up on the driving range, whilst a visit to the club’s restaurant comes well-recommended.
