Quinta do Lago was the first course designed by an American golf architect in Portugal during the 1974. The areas at his disposal could not have been better. Umbrella-pinewoods, on a slightly undulating ground, and the Ria Formosa National Park in the background, full of migratory birds that usually take shelter there, with the constant presence of the mild Atlantic breeze, offered to William Mitchell like a picture canvas.
Quinta Do Lago South previously played host to the Portuguese Open. This course is tougher than the North; accurate tee shots are essential in order to reach many of the greens in regulation and the course is made more challenging by a good variety of doglegs and strategically located hazards. The front nine holes, which wind their way through parkland, favour a draw, while the back nine, which loop around the lake, favour a fade from the tee. Quinta do Lago South would suit players with medium, low handicaps and is a fairly friendly course for ladies enabling them to enjoy a shorter distance with 678m between the red and yellow tees
