The Algarve has a long history of wine-making, dating back to the Phoenicians and Romans, who first introduced grapevines to the area. Today, the Algarve is home to many small, family-run wineries that produce a wide range of wines, from crisp whites to full-bodied reds.
One of the most famous wine farms in the Algarve is Adega do Cantor, located in Guia, a short distance from Albufeira and about 36 Km from Quinta do Lago. The vineyard’s name is loosely translated to "The Winery of the Singer," which is owned by artist Cliff Richards, combines the grapes from three different farms to create two different types of wines, Vida Nova and Onda Nova.
The winery also produces a red wine; the Adega do Cantor Tinto, made from a blend of local grape varieties. Since 2001, about 100,000 bottles have been produced annually. Visit the wine-tasting room filled with barrels and stroll around the lovely vineyards to get a sense of the tranquil atmosphere there.
Quinta da Tôr lies approximately 18Kms inland from Villamoura. In this tour, you'll hear about the Tôr Village family who founded the Quinta da Tôr winery, you'll get a glimpse into the winemaking process, and you'll get to sample our wines all while taking in the breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains.
Following the 12th-century conquest of Silves, the area's vineyard was converted into the Convento de Nossa Senhora do Paraiso, which remained in use until the early nineteenth century. The main building is still standing today.
The winery is situated about 50 Km from Quinta do Lago. Over a thousand years of fascinating myths and tales have been told about Quinta de Mata Mouros. Another popular wine farm in the Algarve is Adega Cooperativa de Tavira, located in the historical town of Tavira, about 46 Km from Vilamoura. This winery cooperates with local grape growers who produce a wide range of wines, including whites, reds, and rosés.
This winery is known for its excellent red wines, such as the Adega Cooperativa de Tavira Reserva Tinto, made from the Trincadeira grape.
Another popular wine farm is Adega do Freixo, located in São Brás de Alportel. This winery is known for its delicious white wines, such as the Adega do Freixo Branco, made from the Arinto grape.
The winery also produces a red wine; the Adega do Freixo Tinto, made from a blend of local grape varieties. Visitors can tour the winery and taste the wines in the tasting room.
The Alentejo, located between Lisbon and the Algarve in the south, is one of Portugal's biggest areas, making up 30% of the country's total land but just 7% of its total population.

One of the most unique wine farms in the Alentejo is Herdade do Esporão, about a two and half hour drive from Quinta do Lago near Évora.
Herdade do Esporão, in Portugal's Alentejo montado habitat (cork oak woodlands), offers exceptional agricultural conditions. This winery is known for its innovative wine-making techniques and its use of traditional grape varieties, such as the Aragonez and Trincadeira. The winery produces a wide range of wines, from whites to reds and rosés.

The cellar's design blends seamlessly and aesthetically with the characteristic Alentejo countryside and is only 80 minutes from Quinta do Lago.
The winemaking process at Herdade dos Grous has taken on a dominantly modern flavour since the recent cellar renovations. The cellar, constructed in 2005, combines cutting-edge technology with conventional winemaking techniques.
To ensure the wine's outstanding quality, every grape that enters the cellar is hand chosen on a table, and the wine is made by gently macerating each grape type. One of the most luxurious experiences in the Alentejo is booking a guided tour of the wine cellar and wine tasting experiences. You can also experience dinner in the wine cellar.
